Rain Man Loses Control

Among the ranks of the Hucks is a character known as “Rain Man.” As one may expect of someone who carries such a moniker, he has a few issues, but we love him. Aside from a weakness for chocolate syrup and ice cream, Rain Man is very health conscious. He rarely drinks, does not smoke, and eats lots of spinach and apples during his rounds of golf. The Hucks know better than to mess with his spinach and apples. Rain Man gets nasty if he does not get his apples and spinach on the fifth, tenth, and fifteenth holes. He rarely rides in a cart when he plays, insisting on carrying his bag or utilizing a push/pull cart.  Needless to say, the Hucks render unto Rain Man a fair share of harassment.  He takes the banter in stride and gives as much guff as he takes. Commenting on our golfing skills, Rain Man frequently informs us, “You’re TERRIBLE!”

The fifth hole at Golden Eagle is a long, straight, par four that begins a descent about half way through the hole.  The descent includes two drops, one that is steep but short and another that is steep and longer.  In order to have his hands free to eat his apple, Rain Man usually lets his push/pull cart go from the top of the hill, and the cart usually bumbles down to some point near the green.  Not too long ago, however, Rain Man had a little incident.

Rain Man took a bite of apple and let go of his cart. The cart rolled down all the drops and suddenly veered strongly to the right. The cart traveled across a bed of rocks, and then bounced and banged its way into a deep drainage ditch. The cart tumbled, clubs flew, and spinach was strewn everywhere. Rain Man’s little buggy was undone!

The Hucks who were playing with Rain Man were their usually supportive selves. Doc, Rotundo, and J.P. laughed so hard they fell out of their carts and lay on their backs in the fairway. After he roused himself, Doc drove ahead and took a couple of pictures (see below).  For the sequel, see Rain Man Loses Control Again.
